Job overview and responsibilities


The purpose of this job will be to direct and manage the day to day activities of the Cloud Engineering Team. The Senior Manager will need to be able to review information and make decisions for the team and organization to positively affect the solution for how United Airlines consumes and interacts with major cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft and others. People, process and technology/engineering decisions need to be made at a quicker pace and having a senior manager to manage through these decisions and problem statements is critical to this solution being available at United Airlines.

  • Directs, coordinates and evaluates the work of cloud engineering team to ensure domain is delivering on all stated objectives
  • Responsible for budgets and resource allocations related to cloud engineering
  • Partners with various functional teams across the business and IT departments to support strategic enterprise vision and design for cloud consumption
  • Partners with engineering delivery teams to research, design and implement the appropriate technology needed to support the cloud strategy
  • Works under general direction of Infrastructure Operations and Engineering senior level management
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with IT senior leadership including IT Directors, Managing Directors and Vice Presidents
  • Manages and prioritizes the work of the cloud engineering team
  • Ensures solutions are clearly communicated for implementation
  • Ensures compliance of architectural and engineering policies, standards and procedures 
  • Monitor and stay abreast of industry trends and anticipate future direction for cloud computing
  • Provide leadership by ensuring department and individual’s goals are met, most notably those aligned to cloud
  • Manages talent utilizing HR supplied recognition tools and participates in workforce planning, staffing, and development
  • Participates in assessing and recommending improvements to the organization structure, roles and responsibilities
  • Responsible for individual performance assessments and improvement plans
  • Responsible for coaching, counseling, assisting employees to develop individual career development and training plans
  • Accountable for administrative management of IT professionals, either as direct reports or sourced – HR administration, Salary administration, Time Reporting, etc.
  • Define, prioritize, allocate resources, track and provide status reporting of work assignments, projects, programs
  • Ensure IT engineering process disciplines (solution delivery, project management, work requests, QA, etc.) and standards are leverage while working through the implementation plan
  • Provide information and periodic updates to support departmental IT performance metrics, monthly project status reporting and quarterly resource planning review

 

 

Required 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training
  • Communication Skills, Integrity and Trust, Teamwork , Technical Expertise in Cloud Services and Providers, Flexibility, Problem Solving, Task Management
  • 3 or more years of experience in Cloud solutions (IaaS/ PaaS) Strategy and Implementation for mid or large size organizations (this includes private/public Clouds – on AWS, Azure, or VMWare)
  • Experience in IaaS including:
  • Understanding of EC2 instance types (i.e. AWS T2, M4, M5, etc.)
  • Understanding of storage options and appropriate use cases (i.e. AWS EBS, S3, EFS)
  • Understanding of instances uses (i.e. AWS Reserved, General Purpose, Spot)
  • Understanding of load balancer options (i.e. AWS ALB, NLB, CLB)
  • Experience with Windows Server and Oracle Enterprise Linux deployments in the cloud including auto-scaling
  • Experience in PaaS including:
  • Understanding of use cases where PaaS is favorable vs IaaS in deployment patterns
  • Familiarity with platform services such as AWS Lambda, SQS, ECS, RDS/Aurora
  • Working understanding of security principles and technology for cloud implementations (IAM, SIEM, CASB)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Experience with modern development and testing techniques such as continuous delivery and continuous integration with Computer Associate’s Release Automation or IBM UrbanCode
  • Experience with cloud management platform Cisco CloudCenter
  • Experience with the configuration management tool, Red Hat’s Ansible
  • Experience managing teams familiar with JSON, Python, Powershell
  • Experience managing teams familiar managing infrastructure as code (i.e. code repositories/Git, A/B deployments, etc.)
  • Airline/travel/logistics industry experience
